Demonstration of slum dwellers. Ostia, May 1975 In the slums of Ostia, a suburban neighborhood of Rome, an extraordinary event took place in May 1975, known as the "Slumber Demonstration": a significant moment in the history of battles for the rights of the inhabitants of Italian slums. The slums of Ostia were settlements made up of people from different regions of Italy, often looking for work and better living conditions. The shacks built with poor materials lacked all essential services, and the inhabitants of the slums were often marginalized and forced to live in extremely difficult conditions. The demonstration attracted the attention of the media and civil society, because it was shown for the first time the terrible living conditions in which so many Italians live. The needs of slum dwellers have sparked a public debate on the need to solve the problem of precarious housing at a national level. In this touching shot by Marcello Geppetti, the worry and uncertainty of tomorrow is made even more emotional by the embrace and gaze of this young couple. A shot that is still very current today.
